A great blue heron standing majestically on the shoreline of the Rideau River near Manotick, Ontario.
A great blue heron takes off from the riverbank, his feet trailing in the water. Herons are great fishing birds, they spend a lot of time standing near the shores of rivers and lakes watching carefully for fish and the right moment to strike.
This photograph was taken with my Canon 7D Mark II camera and a Sigma 150-600 mm lens set at 225 mm. The shutter speed was set for 1/1600 second, the aperture was set to f6.3 and the ISO was set to 800.
Here you can see an example of the Great Blue Heron catching his lunch. Heron's are great fishermen, they stand in the shallow waters for 5, 10 and sometimes 20 minutes perfectly still waiting for a fish to come close enough to strike and in an instant they are in the water catching their lunch. These photographs where taken with my Canon 7D Mark II camera and a 400mm lens. The shutter speed was set at 1/1000 second, the aperture was set at F5.6 and the ISO is set to 400.
If you look real carefully along the shores of the Rideau River you might be lucky to find a Green Heron fishing and if you are luckier he may catch a fish. These small herons are native to this area, however they are hard to see, being significantly smaller then the Great Blue Heron and have a feather colouring and pattern that blends into the foliage along the river bank. This photograph was taken with my Canon 7D camera and a 400 mm lens. The shutter speed was set at 1/2000 second, the aperture set at f8 and the ISO was set to 800.
